HEALTH AND SAFETY

It is the intention of CORTECH FIRE & SECURITY SYSTEMS to ensure that the health and well being of it’s employees, customers and the general public is ensured. This section includes general and specific information in areas of work which may be encountered.

It is the responsibility of the staff to ensure that they have read and understand the information contained within this section, and they shall be vigilant on Health and Safety applications during any stage of the companies business.

Ultimate responsibility for Health and Safety at work lies with the proprietor Mr K. J. Scovell.

All employees will be requested to read the guidelines on Health and Safety, and shall be expected to carry out these practices. Transgressions in this regard shall be subject to the companies disciplinary rules.

Arrangement to Carry out this Policy

Common sense shall prevail in all areas of work by each employee, advice and action can be offered by any manager or supervisor (Proprietor included). Situations which require consideration of Health and Safety shall be reported to managerial staff as soon as practicable.

Protective clothing in the form of overalls are provided by the company together with goggles, facemasks, ear muffs and safety helmets (Hard Hats).

The use of drilling machines or any mechanism likely to produce airborne debris shall warrant the use of goggles by the operator. Periods of work in noisy areas or the use of noisy tools requires the operator to wear ear protection in the form of ear muffs.

Face masks shall be worn by employees working in dusty atmospheres, this includes Lofts, Cellars and under Floorboards. These should also be worn when operating machinery which is likely to produce dust.

Each employee is responsible for wearing safety boots or shoes provided by the company when working in building environments. Safety Helmets are provided by the company for use in building site environments. It should be recognised that large sites require Safety Helmets to be worn at all times.

When using ladders (for access to external bells for example) it is didfficult to provide adequate fixing of the ladder at the top. For this reason the bottom of ladders must be securely located and footed by a second employee at all times during use. Care shall be given to the incline of the same also. (see Policy: Working above 2 metres)

The company provides weatherproof coats for use during winter months, these are provided for the comfort of the employee and to ensure correct working practices.

/// Accidents at Work

ALL accidents are to be reported to managerial staff as soon as is practicable after the incident. The accident details, time and date are to be recorded in the Accident Book (located in the main office) by the Cortech Manager, if the injured person cannot complete same within a short space of time.

First Aid can be carried out by an employee. First Aid Kits are available in all company vehicles, office and stores.

In the event of a serious accident it is imperative that professional aid is summoned quickly (i.e. Ambulance, Doctor, Police or Fire Brigade). This can be achieve by dialling 999 as is common practice.

DO NOT ASSUME SOMEONE ELSE HAS ALREADY TELEPHONED FOR HELP

DO NOT move the injured person UNLESS their position could give rise to further injury and then do so ONLY if you are not putting yourself at risk of injury.

Make the injure4d person ‘comfortable’ as described in the basic First Aid treatment instruction. (This includes suspected spinal injury).

Accompany the injured person to hospital and remain there until all discussions with hospital staff and police (if necessary) have been completed.

In the event of suspected severe cuts or suspected broken bones transport the injured person to the nearest hospital and adopt guidelines as detailed above.
